SENSORIAL ’09 – colour & collaboration

Gorilla seen in the Blue Mountains

International Day of People with a Disability is celebrated on 3rd December each year with the theme: Don't dis my Ability and is "a day of celebration, inclusion and participation". Disability Enterprises Leura (DE) will be part of the celebrations when they present their 5th Annual Art Exhibition: Sensorial '09 - colour & collaboration, in an ongoing partnership with Katoomba Fine Art Gallery.

"Every work is produced by artists with complex disabilities needing many attempts to finalise works that display with pride and promote dignity." said DE's Debra Brown. It is a process which involves the artist in an exploration of his/her senses as they use touch, sight, smell and at times hearing and possibly taste, to create stunning and inspiring art works. Visiting this exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for families, friends, tourists and the community to learn more about differing abilities and the contribution that every person can make.

Be sure to view the interactive installation: The Body as Art a collaboration with Ian Swift, renowned local sculptor and artist "This installation is about the body as art. Bodies come in all shapes and sizes and regardless of this, all are works of art. What is beauty and who is beautiful? says Vicki Godkin of DE.

Visit the exhibition. Be inspired. See the life sized gorilla. Support people with disabilities but also support an event which is of value to our community as a whole.

"Art created by people with a disability makes a unique contribution to the rich and diverse cultural life of Australia - with vast potential to bring about social change through its positive impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities and our nation."
Jennifer Bott, Past CEO, Australia Council
