People with High Support Needs
Disability Enterprises are leaders in providing support to people with disabilities and complex health needs. We are proud that our community living service demonstrates a best practice model, supported by the expertise of our specialised Health Care Team.
The clients of Disability Enterprises' community living service include children, young people or adults who have an intellectual disability and chronic and complex health care needs, requiring specialist health supports and interventions that are not commonly found in other disability accommodation services.
These health care needs may be related to significant physical conditions including but not limited to:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Epilepsy
- Visual Impairment
- Hearing Impairment
- Respiratory disease
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
- Dysphagia
Due to the chronic and complex nature of their impairments or disabilities, DE accommodation clients will require 24-hour, lifelong support in most areas of their daily lives.
DE promotes the principles of empowerment regarding consent and decision making. DE promotes as a fundamental human right the involvement of clients in all aspects of decision making, and firmly believes that doing so improves the quality of life for each client. Due to the complex support needs of clients receiving our service, often families, guardians, persons responsible, or - in the case of a child or young person - those with ‘parental responsibility', will usually be the substitute consent provider on behalf of the client.
Accessing the services of DE is based upon freedom from discrimination in relation to race, culture, gender, sexual preference, class, political affiliation or religious beliefs.
Due to the specific support needs of clients, Disability Enterprises does not offer accommodation services to people with an intellectual disability who display behaviours that threaten the physical or emotional safety or wellbeing of themselves, other clients or staff.
